What is Swahili Futurism?
A re-envisioning of the Swahili Coast, not as an artifact frozen in the past, but as architecture to build forward from.
Swahili Futurism is about reimagining the future through art, without letting go of the deep-rooted heritage, tradition, and culture. People in the past imagined what today would look like. This collection is us doing the same for tomorrow.
It came out of a two-week residency in Fumba Town, Zanzibar, where African artists worked side by side, using Swahili craft and tradition as the foundation for something new.
TWO WEEKS ON THE SWAHILI COAST
Living and working alongside one another from July 25 to August 10, 2026, the cohort used shared studio time, group critique sessions, and deep cultural immersion in Fumba Town to imagine new aesthetic and cultural futures rooted in the region's history, language, and craft traditions.
Through painting, I can express myself, reach many people, and share positive feelings. I often think and feel in colors.
